The Liability for Lacks' family by country
Deborah once said “But I always have thought it was strange, if our mother cells done so much for medicine, how come her family cannot afford to see no doctors? Do not make no sense”. I am sad and surprise for that, because this family offers as a tribute for this country that is very huge. But, they do not get any free back. So, I think the country should be responsible for Lacks’ family.
First, I think the country need to responsible for the liability of Henrietta Lacks’ family, because Henrietta Lacks’ cells - HeLa, it helps the medicine to have a big revolution, and this revolution is a very important meaning for the whole world. In addition, it helps the medicine to get a big step, the scientists can have chances to solve many problems before they cannot understand, and to experiment many things which they cannot try in the past. So, it has changed the whole world, and it promotes the development of the Medicine.
HeLa cells have promoted the development Medicine, because HeLa Cells changed and helped the scientists to invent many new technologies in Medicine. For example: In 1951, Dr. Gey grew the first line of human cells to survive in a test tube. It can help to use in Medical research (From howstuffworks). In addition, it also helps to stop polio, because in February 1952, Jonas Salk developed the world’s first polio vaccine, but he cannot prove the vaccine are safe and effective to use in children before he had done the test in HeLa cells(pg.93). So, Henrietta Lacks’ contribution was a great significance for people, countries and the world. She was the human’s hero.
However, many people are more and more interesting in HeLa cells, and paying attention with it. But, there are some people forget who is Henrietta Lacks, and some people also cannot remember the correct of Henrietta Lacks’ name. For example: Mary Kubicek did the text on HeLa cells, she thought the cell just is a cell, it could not be some other things. But, when she saw Henrietta Lacks’ corpse, and went to take some cells example from that body, she realize “Oh jeez. she’s a real person” (pg.91). This means Mary started to think about her works, and doubted her actions. The other reason for people cannot remember a exactly name of Henrietta Lacks, because after the press officer Roland H. Berg has an interview with Dr. Gey about Henrietta Lacks and HeLa cells, Berg had a wrong Henrietta’s name in the Minneapolis Star article, and Dr. Gey did not tell him that is wrong(pg.107). So, many people cannot know what is Henrietta’s real name. She was most often as Helen Lane, or Helen Larson (pg.109).
According the fact, I perceive it is incredible, because Henrietta Lacks helped the medicine have a big revolution, and her contribution is important for each human being. She is our hero. But, after Henrietta Lacks was died, it took twenty years before people could know the correct name of Henrietta Lacks. She became a no name hero, and people had a nonexistent hero. In addition, the country did not have any reflection for Henrietta Lacks, they also forgot who is Henrietta Lacks, and whose family made contributions for them .They just enjoyed the benefit from the HeLa cells. So, I consider the country should be responsible for the blame of Lacks’ family, let them know they are the hero’s family.
